Stirring Sounds of Multi-Culti Paris: University Of Gnawa, Live at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors
Saturday, October 12th, 6pm - 9pm
on Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
This month four FMU super-friends - Rob, Kurt, Irene and Brian -
will each bring you a set recorded live at this summer's stirring Festival of the Desert / Caravan for Peace Concert at Lincoln Center's
Damrosch Bandshell. Rob kicks things off this week with the performance
that actually closed the July 31 four-band spectacular, by Aziz Sahmaoui and University of Gnawa.
Sahmaoui is the charismatic ex-singer of Paris Maghrebi music machine
Orchestre National de Barbes, and a former Joe Zawinul sideman. His new
group is rooted in Morocco's popular chaabi style but has a distinctly
Parisian multi-culti flavor, with West African and other international
styles in the mix. U of G wowed the crowd in this New York debut, and
you'll hear why tonight.
Becca Stevens
Monday, October 14th, Noon - 3pm
on Irene Trudel's show
With a breezily emotional vocal style and an impressive mastery of
guitar-like instruments, Becca Stevens has been quietly gaining a strong
fanbase in the jazz/rock world. She's worked folks like with Brad
Mehldau, Lionel Loueke and the Bjorkestra, to name a few, and has a
couple of gorgeous albums out as bandleader. Stevens, along with Rebecca
Martin and Gretchen Parlato, perform as the ensemble Tillery (which had
to reschedule for later in the year). Becca Stevens drops by to play
solo on Irene's show.

Dawn of Humans
Wednesday, October 16th, 7pm - 8pm
on Distort Jersey City with Deed Runlea
With all members originally hailing from Brooklyn or Jersey City,
New York punk icons Dawn of Humans bring their live mutant jams to the
WFMU studios. With EPs on Always Restrictions and Toxic State Records,
this live session is a unique opportunity to find the kings of New York
punk in a realm that exists between their insane live show
(understatement) and their flawless recordings. Truly deranged, creepy,
and anthemic punk that will leave you confused, slam dancing, and taking
your clothes off all at the same time. With three brand new songs, this
is Dawn of Humans at the height of their post Midwest tour resurgence.
Members of Crazy Spirit, Hank Wood & The Hammerheads, Warthog,
Murderer, Rosenkopf, Perdition, and pretty much every other New York
punk band that matters. Don't miss this.

Center Out of Doors. The five women and four men of the ensemble played a
set of quietly hypnotic, trance-inducing music as a part of the
Festival au Désert – Caravan for Peace concert on July 31, 2013. Thanks
to Lincoln Center and WFMU's Rob Weisberg for making this possible, and
watch for other Caravan for Peace broadcasts on Rob, Irene Trudel and
Brian Turner's shows.

Speed the Plough

on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
New Jersey's Speed the Plough are longtime musical accomplices of
WFMU. They return to our studios for a live performance on Airborne
Event on October 21st. Speed the Plough was born in the infamous 1980s
haze of lush acoustic instrumentation and psychedelic tunes that also
gave us the related groups The Feelies and The Trypes. In 2010, the band
was revitalized with the addition of a second generation -- the kids of
some original members joined, and the group reopened the music spigot
and let the new songs pour out. New this fall is their collection "The
Plough & The Stars," which pairs a best-of CD culled from their
first 4 records with a vinyl LP that is split between new tunes and a
1993 WFMU session.

Caribbean with his family becomes enchanted by and obsessed with a
beautiful, mysterious older woman who always dresses in pink.
Singles Going On Vacation!
Wednesday, October 23rd, 9pm - Midnight
on The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
Like many of you, and like many WFMU DJs, when EFD goes on vacation
he loves to shop for cheap used records, especially singles (they take
up less room in the suitcase). The problem: there's never enough time to
play them during a regular show. The solution: WFMU's annual Singles
Going Steady week! Tune in at 9pm on Wednesday the 23rd to hear how EFD
spent his summer vacations.

though he really doesn't want to do it. What he really wants to do is
quit radio and leave town.
Pony Time AND Chastity Belt
Wednesday, October 30th, 9pm - Midnight
on The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
An incredible month of special shows wraps up with live music from
two great Seattle bands! Pony Time is a two-piece dance-punk band with a
bass player and a drummer. They have a song called "Gary Numan." No
further information is needed.
Chastity Belt's latest album is called No Regerts. That is not a typo. They were recently featured on NPR in large part, it seems, because one of the hosts thought they had "the most horrifying publicity photo"
he'd ever seen. (He subsequently allowed that their music "isn't
anywhere near the worst music you'll ever hear — in fact, it's awesome."
So.)
Pony Time and Chastity Belt are on tour together across the US (and
back!). You can see them at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on Thursday Oct. 25
and in New Brunswick NJ on Saturday Oct. 27 (ask a punk where the show
is). If you miss them live, tune in to WFMU Wednesday night, Oct. 30, to
hear live sets from both bands!

Michael welcomes The Paley Brothers - who signed to Sire Records
(just after the Ramones, and just before Talking Heads) where their
classic Power-Pop was slightly out of sync with prevailing trends. Along
the way they worked with Phil Spector, played Madison Square Garden
(opening for Shaun Cassidy) and released an EP and an LP before
dissolving. Their LP & EP (with tons of never before released
material) have just been collected on the CD "The Complete Recordings"!
Joe Frank - In the Dark: "Lila and the Professor"
Wednesday, November 6th, 3pm - 6pm
on Irwin's show
Installments of Joe Frank's radio series IN THE DARK air each
Wednesday at 4pm (Eastern) on Irwin's program. The episode entitled
"Lila and the Professor " airs Weds. November 6th at 4pm (Eastern). Joe
describes his exasperating girlfriend, Lila, a clumsy, petulant,
disorganized lady who not-so-secretly maintains a romantic relationship
with her aging, crippled mentor, Professor Vogel.
Samm Bennett
Monday, November 11th, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
Longtime downtown NYC composer and multi-instrumental genius Samm
Bennett used to head up the band Chunk and has been in the mix with
musicians and groups such as the Kropotkins, Ned Rothenberg, John Zorn,
and Elliott Sharp. He moved to Japan a number of years ago, but Airborne
Event is delighted that he'll be at the WFMU studios on November 11th
during a fall US trip. His schedule will also include stops at the
Downtown Music Gallery, Roulette, and Barbes.
JFK 50th Anniversary Show
Thursday, November 21st, 9pm - Midnight
on Music To Spazz By with Dave the Spazz
What better way to commemorate the eve of the 50th anniversary of
this tragic event than with novelty JFK songs from the stupid to the
sublime?
Aye Aye Rabbit
Monday, November 25th, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
Aye Aye Rabbit is the trio of Ed Pastorini, Indigo Street, and Greg
Saunier. All are consummate musicians with deep creative roots. What
they do in Aye Aye Rabbit is what usually gets called "improvisation."
But in this case it would be accurate to call them spontaneous
composers, because their rapport is such that they make impromptu songs
that seem to surface in fully-crafted condition. It's a joy to hear them
work together.
