Longtime downtown NYC composer and multi-instrumental genius Samm Bennett used to head up the band Chunk and has been in the mix with musicians and groups such as the Kropotkins, Ned Rothenberg, John Zorn, and Elliott Sharp. Obnox
Tuesday, November 12th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
The prolific solo project of Cleveland's Lamont "Bim" Thomas (ex-Bassholes, Puffy Areolas, Unholy Two among others), Obnox treads on some junked-out Stooges/Pussy Galore terrain with ample heaps of white noise and stylistic curveballs. Definitely in the rock and roll corner, yet stretching into some wild and wooly places your traditionalist garage rockers opt not to tread; Obnox has issued 9 releases in only two years via labels like Permanent, 12XU, Anyway, Smog Veil and more. Live they'll be trashing it up today on Brian's show as a two-piece, see them November 9th at the Cake Shop!

Joe Frank - In the Dark: "Lila and the Professor"
Wednesday, November 13th, 3pm - 6pm

Installments of Joe Frank's radio series IN THE DARK air each Wednesday at 4pm (Eastern) on Irwin's program. The episode entitled "Lila and the Professor " airs Weds. November 13th at 4pm (Eastern). An Interview With the Ramones From the Summer of '76
Wednesday, November 13th, 9pm - Midnight
on
The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
On July 8th, 1976, the Ramones sat down for an interview in the offices of 16 Magazine. It was just 10 weeks after the release of their debut album. Their interviewer was not unknown to them: Lisa Jane Persky was already a regular at CBGB, and she was co-starring off-Broadway with Divine. She was also a co-founder of New York Rocker, the magazine that would publish this interview in issue #4. A couple of years ago Lisa re-discovered the cassette recording of this interview, and she'll share the interview in full for the very first time with WFMU listeners this coming Wednesday night on The Evan "Funk" Davies show. You can also expect ample reminiscing about New York City at the time punk rock and the CBGB scene was just starting to take off -- with plenty of complementary music, of course! Tune in to WFMU at 9pm on Wednesday November 13th for this fascinating interview with the Ramones at the dawn of their career.

Cherie Currie
Thursday, November 14th, 3am - 6am
on Dark Night of the Soul with Julie

The original lead singer of the all-female rock band The Runaways, with hits "Cherry Bomb" and "Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin," actress, author and chainsaw artist Cherie Currie visits WFMU to chat with Julie during the east coast leg of her solo tour. Cherie talks about The Runaways, David Bowie, chainsaw art and upcoming projects, including work with Lita Ford and Kim Fowley. Along with the interview is a DJ set by Cherie featuring songs she loves.

Robert Gordon author of "Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion"
Saturday, November 16th, 11am - 1pm
on Michael Shelley's show

Michael chats with author Robert Gordon about his new book "Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion" which chronicles the meteoric rise and tragic fall of the Memphis based Stax label.

Lazy
Monday, November 18th, 9am - Noon
on Liz Berg's show

Kansas City art punkers Lazy play live on Liz's show. The band's anthem "Party City" says it all! Celebrating the release of their new EP "Obsession" (Moniker Records), Lazy are touring the Northeast and Midwest with a fury. Don't miss out on high energy, low-brow rock at its best!

WTF JFK? I'm 50!
Tuesday, November 19th, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aerial View with Chris T.
Miriam Linna of Norton Records returns to discuss the new release Tragic Songs From The Grassy Knoll and the music that was on the radio the day JFK died. We'll also hear original audio from the first Dallas radio station to report the dreadful news from Dealey Plaza! And we of course want to know who YOU think killed JFK!

Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals
plus: Joe Frank - In the Dark: "Problems"

Wednesday, November 20th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irwin's show
Once upon a time, when American industry ruled the earth, business and Broadway had a baby. This mutant offspring, glimpsed only at conventions and sales meetings, was the industrial musical. It was like a Broadway show, except the audience consisted of sales managers and field reps, and the catchy songs were about bathtubs, Ford tractors, or electrical power distribution management.

Steve Young and Sport Murphy have collaborated on the book EVERYTHING’S COMING UP PROFITS (Blast Books), a history of alt-universe musical theater featuring song & dance about life insurance, corrosion-free silicone, and Westinghouse appliances. Some of these shows were hilariously lame. Some were pretty good, and some were flat-out fantastic.

Young and Murphy will appear on Irwin's program on Weds. November 20, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm (Eastern), along with publisher/book designer Laura Lindgren. For 90 minutes they'll chronicle the genre and spin dozens of mind-boggling songs from rare industrial show LPs.

Young and Murphy will also offer a showcase of archival industrial musical film clips at this year's WFMU Record Fair, on Saturday afternoon, November 23.

JOE FRANK: Irwin will also air an installment of Joe Frank's radio series IN THE DARK at 4pm (Eastern). In this episode, entitled "Problems," Joe laments his flawed father and eulogizes his idealized mother.

JFK 50th Anniversary Show
Thursday, November 21st, 9pm - Midnight
on
Music To Spazz By with Dave the Spazz
What better way to commemorate the eve of the 50th anniversary of this tragic event than with novelty JFK songs from the stupid to the sublime?

Aye Aye Rabbit
Monday, November 25th, 9pm - Midnight
on
Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
Aye Aye Rabbit is the trio of Ed Pastorini, Indigo Street, and Greg Saunier. All are consummate musicians with deep creative roots. What they do in Aye Aye Rabbit is what usually gets called "improvisation." But in this case it would be accurate to call them spontaneous composers, because their rapport is such that they make impromptu songs that seem to surface in fully-crafted condition. It's a joy to hear them work together.

Joe Frank - In the Dark: "Pilgrim (Part 1)"
Wednesday, November 27th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irwin's show
Installments of Joe Frank's radio series IN THE DARK air each Wednesday at 4pm (Eastern) on Irwin's program. The episode entitled "Pilgrim (Part 1)" airs Weds. November 27th at 4pm (Eastern). In this episode, Joe recounts, in nauseating detail, the annual ritual of overindulging at a lavish family Thanksgiving dinner. He then offers the history of the feast, the story of the Pilgrims, and chronicles of pilgrimages around the world.
