UPCOMING SPECIALS ON WFMU:
Power Pop Throwdown, with special guest Clay Pigeon!
Wednesday, April 10th, 9pm - Midnight
on The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
Uh-oh, looks like the Evan "Funk" Davies show is going to get a little
dusty! Clay Pigeon, host of The Dusty Show, is bringing a stack of his
favorite so-called power pop records down to WFMU, and EFD will match --
if not best! -- those selections track by track. The Jersey City Fire
Department will be on standby to hose down the turntables as needed
during this epic event. Tune in at 9pm (EDT) on Wednesday, April 10, to
find out which DJ leaves the studio at midnight with his head held high!
The Fifth Annual All Covers Show Show
Friday, April 12th, 3pm - 6pm
on Miniature Minotaurs with Kurt Gottschalk
To meet virtually no demand, the annual All Covers Show Show returns.
Few if anyone really considers this annual indulgence as an harbinger of
Spring. See if you do! See if Kurt has any ideas left! See if he plays
that woman singing Petula Clark in Czech again! It might be the only
show of the year where Kurt plays things he doesn't really like, and why
would you want to miss that?
Live from Barbes: Sumptuous Song Stylings of Turkey, Eastern Europe & Central Asia
Saturday, April 13th, 6pm - 9pm
on Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Join us at Barbes,
the music-lover's haven at 9th St and 6th Ave in Park Slope, Brooklyn
for a jam-packed night of music of Eastern Europe, Turkey, and Central
Asia featuring an array acclaimed vocalists.
We kick off at 6 in Eastern Europe with the captivating solo song stylings of Eva Salina followed by a taste of Lithuanian-style klezmer with Litvakus. From 7-8 it's sounds of Turkey with oudist Adam Good and two ensembles: Hoshneva plays music of Turkic peoples from across the Balkans, and Dolunay spotlights Ahmet Erdogdular
- considered one of today's best Ottoman Turkish vocalists. And a
special treat in the final hour: Gifted singer / multi-instrumentalist Hadar Maoz and her band are flying in from Israel for a big debut concert at Drom
in the East Village on April 11. And they'll wrap up our Barbes show
too, playing rocking blends of Bukharian (Central Asian / Jewish) music
with rock, soul and funk.
Admission is free (though bands may pass the hat) and we'll be giving
away free FMU swag, so get in on the action in person or over the
airwaves.
Lonnie Holley Month
Tuesday, April 16th, 9am - Noon
on This Is The Modern World with Trouble
April is Lonnie Holley month on This is the Modern World with Trouble.
On his way to perform at the Whitney Museum as part of the "Blues for
Smoke" show, Lonnie visited the WFMU studios and recorded almost 2 hours
of cosmic soul. So much wonderfulness that we have to spread the love
around! Tune in each Tuesday morning in April to hear never before heard
live sounds from the multi-talented Lonnie Holley.
The Moto-Gators & The Bamboo Kids
Tuesday, April 16th, Noon - 3pm
on Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
It's a New York double-dip. First up, the fabulous Stax/Link Wray-inspired instrumental stylings of the Moto-Gators will leave you speechless, like their songs already are! Then it's the return of the Bamboo Kids
to WFMU. New York City may have lost its grit but you can still find it
in the rock and roll anthems by these longtime FMU faves. new double
LP, release show April 26 at Grand Victory in Brooklyn with Paul Collins
Beat, M.O.T.O. & the Recordettes!
John Strausbaugh
Wednesday, April 17th, 3pm - 6pm
on Irwin's show
Journalist/historian John Strausbaugh returns to Irwin's program on April 17 to discuss his new book, "The Village: 400 Years of Beats and Bohemians, Radicals and Rogues - A History of Greenwich Village"
(published by Ecco/HarperCollins). From the Dutch settlers and
Washington Square patricians, to the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and
Prohibition-era speakeasies; from Abstract Expressionism and beatniks,
to Stonewall and AIDS, Strausbaugh chronicles how a few square miles of
New York real estate have had a huge impact on world culture.
Strausbaugh is the former editor of New York Press, and has written for
the New York Times, the Washington Post, Cabinet, and many other
publications. His books include E: Reflections on the Birth of the Elvis
Faith, Rock 'Til You Drop, Black Like You, and Sissy Nation. He posts
vignettes of downtown NYC history at chiseler.org.
Jason Sigal fills in for Faye
Thursday, April 18th, 9am - Noon
on Talk's Cheap with Jason Sigal
Olneyville Sound System
have been churning out the sludge bass and impossible drums from
Providence since 1996, with members of Landed, Six Finger Satellite, and
the Boredoms' Boadrum. Imagine Lightning Bolt covering ESG, concise
noise-funk with nods to Flipper and Men's Recovery Project. OSS play Silent Barn on April 6th.
Keaton Henson
Saturday, April 20th, 6am - 9am
on Shrunken Planet with Jeffrey Davison
Londoner Keaton Henson's second album, "Birthdays", has just been
released (in the U.S. on the Anti label). Known to be reclusive and
averse to performing, he had flown from the U.K. to do only two gigs,
one each in New York and Los Angeles, so it was an honor to have him
swing by our studio B to record four songs. (These songs will also be
posted on the Free Music Archive.) Beguiling and quietly charming in
person, Keaton's songs are deeply personal and vividly emotional. No
small part of his appeal stems from the impression that he has recently
arrived from a gentler and more romantic age.
Paul Combs
Saturday, April 20th, 9am - 11am
on Bob Brainen's show
Bob welcomes musician and educator Paul Combs, author of the recent
book: "Dameronia: The Life and Music of Tadd Dameron." Dameron's career
stretched from the end of the Swing band era through Bebop and beyond,
and as a composer, arranger and pianist he helped expand the vocabulary
and textures of music, working with a "who's who" of Modern Jazz greats.
We'll be playing lots of his recordings from the better known pieces to
rarer recordings and discussing his career. Join us!
Prizehog
Sunday, April 21st, 3am - 6am
on Imaginary Radio with Chris M.
Sludge MONSTERS Prizehog destroy the airwaves with a heavy live session
at WFMU! Catch them at Death By Audio in Brooklyn on April 18th.
Pigeons
Monday, April 22nd, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
Pigeons have a past in the improvisational world and have gradually
moved toward a unique sort of yeye-inflected psychedelic folk pop. Core
duo Wednesday Knudsen and Clark Griffin used to play with the Seattle
freak outfit the Sea Donkeys. They've since moved to the Bronx and will
be joined by Jason Meagher (of No-Neck Blue Band) on bass and Rob Smith
(of Rhyton) on drums. The latest Pigeons record, "They
Sweetheartstammers," came out on Soft Abuse a little over a year ago.
Tune in for a rare treat when Pigeons visit the WFMU Love Room for a
live set on Airborne Event on April 22nd.
Lonnie Holley Month
Tuesday, April 23rd, 9am - Noon
on This Is The Modern World with Trouble
April is Lonnie Holley month on This is the Modern World with Trouble.
On his way to perform at the Whitney Museum as part of the "Blues for
Smoke" show, Lonnie visited the WFMU studios and recorded almost 2 hours
of cosmic soul. So much wonderfulness that we have to spread the love
around! Tune in each Tuesday morning in April to hear never before heard
live sounds from the multi-talented Lonnie Holley.
Las Ardillas and Los Vigilantes
Tuesday, April 23rd, Noon - 3pm
on Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
It's a double shot of Puerto Rico punk! Las Ardillas
features members of Davila 666 and predates them, serving as the
stomping grounds where they sharpened their punk chops long before
hitting the festival circuit. Praised for their catchy hooks, and
disarming on-the-floor rummage, they take you on a wild ride through
late 70s and early 80s punk rock. Los Vigilantes return to WFMU almost a year to the day of their last visit, bringing their juvenile delinquent garage-punk anthems.
Mike Watt
Thursday, April 25th, Noon - 3pm
on Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine
From Pedro and just off his last tour, Mike Watt is the hardest working
musician on the planet. He will be calling in and hosting
Dianekamikaze's PEER PRESSURE segment on April 25th! He will be live, so
listeners will be able to ask him questions via the interactive live
playlist... Minutemen? Dos? Stooges? Ciccone Youth? His list of
accomplishments and credits is long and he's sure to be an amazing guest
and DJ.
One Master
Friday, April 26th, Midnight - 3am
on Wm. Berger presents My Castle of Quiet
One Master, from Connecticut, have made a quick name for themselves in
US black metal (albeit over ten years of work) with two solid, flawless
full-lengths. These records do exactly what you want new black metal to
do - take the genre seriously, have a footing in the style, but have
your own, singular identity and write great songs. One Master do all
that, and their Forsaking A Dead World (CD on Eternal Death; betraying a
penchant for early Bathory, Kampfar, and whole host of other things)
laid solid ground, proving the band's mettle as songwriters, while
opening the door for The Quiet Eye of Eternity (Peasant Majik LP, 2008),
a complex, intelligent, and again masterfully written and arranged
black metal album, just raw and dirty enough, with spectacular songs.
Tommy Roe
Saturday, April 27th, 11am - 1pm
on Michael Shelley's show
Michael chats with Tommy Roe (in town for a April 29th show at BB Kings)
about his string of top 40 hits including "Sheila", "Everybody", "Sweet
Pea", "Hooray for Hazel" and "Dizzy", touring with The Beatles, and
maybe his 1969 appearance on "Green Acres."
Holly Hunt
Sunday, April 28th, 3am - 6am
on Imaginary Radio with Chris M.
Holly Hunt take a detour to Jersey City and bring ecstatic, crushing
sludge riffs that will probably break your face! Also performing at the
Acheron in Brooklyn on April 27th.
Seaven Teares
Monday, April 29th, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
Charlie Looker of Extra Life and Zs formed Seaven Teares as a side
project a couple of years back. The name comes from a 400 year old John
Dowland composition, which gives a hint of the direction the group takes
on their just-released record "Power Ballads": pop music played on
acoustic instruments, deeply infused with medieval chamber music but
ultramodern in the end. The band also includes mezzo-soprano Amirtha
Kidambi, multi-instrumentalist Robbie Lee, and percussionist Russell
Greenberg. Dan is happy to welcome them to the WFMU airwaves on April
29th.
Lonnie Holley Month
Tuesday, April 30th, 9am - Noon
on This Is The Modern World with Trouble
April is Lonnie Holley month on This is the Modern World with Trouble.
On his way to perform at the Whitney Museum as part of the "Blues for
Smoke" show, Lonnie visited the WFMU studios and recorded almost 2 hours
of cosmic soul. So much wonderfulness that we have to spread the love
around! Tune in each Tuesday morning in April to hear never before heard
live sounds from the multi-talented Lonnie Holley.
Dungeons & Dragons Live!
Sunday, May 5th, 3am - 6am
on Imaginary Radio with Chris M.
Grab your dice and ride a dragon through the early morning hours! The fine folks at the Twenty Sided Store in Brooklyn will be leading us through an exciting adventure as we play D&D live on the radio!
Deerhunter
Monday, May 6th, 9am - Noon
on Liz Berg's show
Psychedelic indie overlords Deerhunter swing by WFMU for the first time
ever to play a live set on Liz Berg's show. Although frontman Bradford
Cox (also of Atlas Sound) seems to wind up on the Pitchfork gossip
blotter somewhat regularly, the drama follows him for a reason: the man
is a charismatic songwriter. Deerhunter is curating All Tomorrow's
Parties in the UK this June, and are releasing their first album in
three years this May. Tune in to hear Deerhunter's sublime pop anthems,
and you'll know what all the fuss is about.
Sun Ra Arkestra's Marshall Allen and Danny Ray Thompson
Tuesday, May 7th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show
Two legends of Sun Ra's Arkestra performing today live! A visit to
Brian's show from Marshall Allen (alto sax) and Danny Ray Thompson
(baritone sax) from the Arkestra, joined by Ed Wilcox on drums and
vocals, Jerry Mayall (both longtime members of Temple of Bon Matin) on
upright bass, plus electronic music pioneer Charles Cohen. This
newly-expanded, active working band has evolved out of Wilcox's five
European tours with Allen, and we're severely honored to have them make
music in the WFMU studios at last!
Belus
Sunday, May 12th, 3am - 6am
on Imaginary Radio with Chris M.
Get your guts stomped on by Brooklyn's Belus! Don't miss this
super-heavy black/doom metal trio in an exclusive Imaginary Radio
session.
Mudhoney
Tuesday, May 14th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show
When WFMU broadcast Mudhoney live from ATP a few years ago, it was fully
obvious that their instrumental power and Mark Arm's inimitable yowl
were still very much in full force. Even more so at last year's
Primavera broadcast (where they followed up after their set by
bumrushing and taking over the WFMU fairway tent!). 25 years down the
line Mudhoney still have the bottles and bodies flying, soaking up a
past and continuing to deliver the one-two riffage even as bands they
influenced have vanished and reunited at half mast. April sees Sub Pop
and Mudhoney's respective anniversaries marked by a brand new
full-length "Vanishing Point" (their ninth!) and a visit to Brian's show
to rock faces off. They also play at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on
Saturday, May 11th and Bowery Ballroom May 12th. Don't miss this
sure-to-be-legendary session!
Moira Scar
Monday, May 27th, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
A trio of psychonauts from Oakland -- Roxy Monoxide, LuLu Gamma Ray, and
Ryan Bonus Beast -- channel the cosmic entity Moira Scar to make a wild
din of deeply weird ritual garage punk cabaret music. Their new record
"Scarred for Life" is out on Resipiscent Records, and they'll make a
stop at WFMU on May 27th to play live on the Airborne Event while
they're touring in the East. Don't miss it!
