UPCOMING SPECIALS ON WFMU:

Insect Ark
Thursday, May 9th, 3pm - 6pm
on Strength Through Failure with Fabio

Insect Ark, the solo project of Dana Schecter (Angels of Light, Bee & Flower, American Music Club, etc.) hits Strength Through Failure today. Schecter utilizes bass, lap steel, keyboards, programming in performance, and she'll be talking up her forthcoming album and gig coming up May 15th at the Delancey (with Ulan Bator, Martin Bisi, and Ron Anderson also on the bill).

Bludded Head
Friday, May 10th, Midnight - 3am
on Wm. Berger presents My Castle of Quiet

Not all doom bands are created equal, not by a long shot. Some are just trying to set downbeats as far afield from one another as possible, with lots of hard-guy posturing in between. Bludded Head play an earthy, artfully composed and deftly executed brand of doom, with electric cello serving as the bass instrument, and Nevada Hill's vocals, a wild wail that could crack drywall. Their lengthy songs don't sit in one place too long; they keep changing, evolving with each new passage, and subtle, pregnant sections thoughtfully divide up the crushing power. BH take the doom sound to places it's not been before, and MCoQ is pleased and proud to catch up with the band on tour, with a local show at Silent Barn, Friday 5/10, also featuring Guardian Alien, and previous Castle performers/friends C. Lavender and Bob Bellerue. Bludded Head have a new drummer, and are now a four-piece (originally at trio), and we can't wait to hear how they've evolved, and what new steamrolled delights and mind-expanding explosions they have for us.

DJ PNutz
Friday, May 10th, 7pm - 8pm
on
Put The Needle On The Record with Billy Jam
DJ PNutz - the producer/DJ from San Diego, CA who recently released the album "Rackmount" - will stop by the WFMU on-air studios to do a live turntable set on "Put The Needle On The Record" with Billy Jam on Friday May 10th, 2013 at 7pm.

William Tyler (Part 1)
Saturday, May 11th, 6am - 9am
on
Shrunken Planet with Jeffrey Davison
Guitarist William Tyler, longtime member of the band Lambchop, was in town recently to perform at Mercury Lounge. Merge Records has just released his third solo album, "Impossible Truth". These records are not in the guitar soli idiom, with Tyler beautifully integrating other instruments into an organic whole. While most of the live segments on Shrunken Planet run an hour, Tyler is so fascinating that I couldn't bear to edit this, and part 2 will air next week.

People Who Only Need a Beat
Sunday, May 12th, 9pm - Midnight
on
World of Echo with Dave Mandl
Three of WFMU's Hoof & Mouth rhythm-keepers--Dave Mandl, Evan "Funk" Davies, and Irwin Chusid--will celebrate rim shots, ruffs, rolls, and paradiddles with a three-hour drum throwdown on Sunday, May 12, from 9 p.m. to midnight (Eastern). Each will in turn feature tracks showcasing some of their favorite percussionists. You'll hear Art Blakey, Keith Moon, Bev Bevan, Mitch Mitchell, Bonzo, Max Roach, Bill Bruford, Chris Cutler, Aynsley Dunbar, Dave King, and lots of unsung drummers whose names you probably won't recognize. Phil Collins, even.

Mudhoney
Tuesday, May 14th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show

When WFMU broadcast Mudhoney live from ATP a few years ago, it was fully obvious that their instrumental power and Mark Arm's inimitable yowl were still very much in full force. Even more so at last year's Primavera broadcast (where they followed up after their set by bumrushing and taking over the WFMU fairway tent!). 25 years down the line Mudhoney still have the bottles and bodies flying, soaking up a past and continuing to deliver the one-two riffage even as bands they influenced have vanished and reunited at half mast. April sees Sub Pop and Mudhoney's respective anniversaries marked by a brand new full-length "Vanishing Point" (their ninth!) and a visit to Brian's show to rock faces off. They also play at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday, May 11th and Bowery Ballroom May 12th. Don't miss this sure-to-be-legendary session!

Glockabelle
Thursday, May 16th, 3am - 6am
on Dark Night of the Soul with Julie

What do you get when you take a couple of old casio VL tones, a collection of thimbles, a glockenspiel and French vocals? You get the inimitable Annabelle Cazes and her self-described french punk-afrobeat-yé-yé. Annabelle takes a break from making her kitchen konzert videos to bring her classical training and well-cooked keyboards to the Dark Night. Ethan Snyder joins Glockabelle to add hyperactive percussion to her tiny keys and frantic pings.

William Tyler (Part 2)
Saturday, May 18th, 6am - 9am
on
Shrunken Planet with Jeffrey Davison
This is part 2 of an interview and live session with guitarist William Tyler, who is touring in support of his gorgeous new album, "Impossible Truth", just out on Merge Records. Quite the raconteur, you will come away with a greater appreciation of this musician, who draws deeply from the wells of inspiration.

Howard Kaylan
Saturday, May 18th, 11am - 1pm
on Michael Shelley's show

Michael welcomes Howard Kaylan back to the show to discuss his new book "Shell Shocked: My Life with the Turtles, Flo and Eddie, and Frank Zappa, etc." The book is an honest account of Howard's on and off stage life - including great stories about the creation of songs like “Happy Together,” “She’d Rather Be With Me,” “You Baby,” “It Ain’t Me Babe,” “Elenore” and “You Showed Me.”

"And this is not for your amusement. . ." - #May20th High School Subculture Spectacular!
Monday, May 20th, 3am - 6am
on
amEdeo's show
Dear Diary,

Today I found out that amEdeo and his guests Rev. Joseph "Joe Philips" Duffy (WFMU Young Guns), Rachael Fox (Über Artist and WFMU Super-Volunteer), DJ Keili (Beastin' the Airwaves!), DJ Julie (Dark Night of the Soul), and the inimitable Yvonne (The "Eat It, Frank Capra" Fundraiser) will be gathering for a special discussion of high school, subcultures, and self-expression. I hear everybody's invited. Am I "everyone"? Will I ever be anyone? Do you think they noticed me? Also: Diary readings! Bad songs! and Caaaaandy!!!

I think we're alone now,
amEdeo

Born Loose

Robert Scotto discusses and plays Moondog
Wednesday, May 22nd, 3pm - 6pm
on Irwin's show

He was blind, dressed in ancient Viking regalia, and slept on 6th Avenue during the 1950s. And he was a musical genius. Louis Hardin was known as Moondog, and Irwin and guest Robert Scotto celebrate the birthday of the majestic pioneer on May 22 from 3-4pm (Eastern). Hear recordings of strange sounds and exotic beauty from the 1950s to the 1990s, including unreleased material. Moondog recorded with animals, self-made instruments, and tugboat horns, and composed percussion pieces, chamber music, and works for 25 saxophones. Author Robert Scotto wrote the first full-length biography of Moondog in 2008, and the second edition is being published in May. Scotto also wrote the Moondog entry in the second edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music. Scotto recently retired as professor of English at Baruch College. His previous publications include a Critical Edition of Catch-22, a book on the contemporary American novel, and essays on Walter Pater, James Joyce and other major 19th and 20th century writers.

Moira Scar
Monday, May 27th, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah

A trio of psychonauts from Oakland -- Roxy Monoxide, LuLu Gamma Ray, and Ryan Bonus Beast -- channel the cosmic entity Moira Scar to make a wild din of deeply weird ritual garage punk cabaret music. Their new record "Scarred for Life" is out on Resipiscent Records, and they'll make a stop at WFMU on May 27th to play live on the Airborne Event while they're touring in the East. Don't miss it!

Broken Water
Thursday, May 30th, 3am - 6am
on Dark Night of the Soul with Julie

Noisy but gorgeous, Broken Water's sound mingles punk, shoegaze and psychedelia into a crunchy, droney, hazy mix. Alternating vocalists blend into distorted guitars and changeable rhythms perfect for a misty night or rain-drenched soul.

Tuesday, June 4th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
Two legends of Sun Ra's Arkestra performing today live! This newly-expanded, active working band has evolved out of Wilcox's five European tours with Allen, and we're severely honored to have them make music in the WFMU studios at last!
