scuzzy garage punk infused with a creepy crawl Ubu/Hawkwind psych out

The Mantles

on Hello Children with Faye
San Francisco's jangly-est pop outfit The Mantles visit the WFMU
studios for an infallibly good-mood inducing live set. Their latest
record "Long Enough to Leave" out earlier this year made it to WFMU's
heavily played records list faster than you can say "Slumberland." Turn
up your radio this Saturday night at any midsummer party & all your
company will be sure to thank you.
Linda Draper
Monday, July 22nd, Noon - 3pm
on Irene Trudel's show
From a father who studied guitar with Segovia to a credible
guitarist/singer/songwriter on her own, Linda Draper developed her own
timeless style through renaissance fairs and church choirs. Producer
Kramer took a liking to her style of songwriting, working with Draper on
her first three albums. On her newest, "Edgewise," produced by Matt
Keating, her spare songs are embellished with full band arrangements,
hinting at influences like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and Nick Drake.
Linda Draper drops by to play some of her new songs solo.
Deveykus
Monday, July 22nd, 9pm - Midnight
on Airborne Event with Dan Bodah
Deveykus are a Philly-based avant jazz doom band led by experimental
trombonist Dan Blacksberg. Their new record, Pillar Without Mercy, just
came out on the Tzadik label. Deveykus means "to cleave" to G-D, and is
also the name of a style of Hasidic nigunim song and the ecstatic trance
state it creates. Tune in to hear the band bring Jewish music fully
into the world of experimental doom metal on Airborne Event on July
22nd.

Joe Frank - Unfictional Radio Dramas

Another new Joe Frank radio drama will air on Irwin's program July 24.
These half-hour programs, produced for KCRW's "Unfictional" series, were
acquired for WFMU through the Public Radio Exchange. Each episode
explores Joe Frank's dark thoughts and candid observations. The dramatic
quality of these new episodes matches the best of Frank's previous work
heard on WFMU. The sixth new drama, "Reality Check," will air Weds.
July 24 at 4pm (Eastern). After this episode, Irwin will begin airing
archived installments of Joe Frank's half-hour IN THE DARK series each
Wednesday at 4pm for the remainder of the summer.

Maxwell's, the Hoboken mainstay and longtime dear friend of WFMU, is
closing its doors at the end of July. Come down and join Evan "Funk"
Davies and other WFMU friends in the front room lounge on Wednesday
night, July 24 -- Bar/None Records night! -- to celebrate Maxwell's
incredible 30+ year run as one of the premier music venues in the US.
Numerous Bar/None artists, including The Health & Happiness Show,
Freedy Johnston & Band, and Chris Stamey with Anton Fier and Gene
Holder, will be performing in the back room; we expect that many of them
(as well as other mystery guest stars!) will find their way to the
space that was once home to the famous "Folk And Fondue" series to share
their thoughts about Maxwell's and maybe play an acoustic song or two
for the WFMU listening audience. Be a part of Maxwell's final week by
coming down to the show in person (Maxwell's is at 1039 Washington St.
in Hoboken) or by tuning in to WFMU at 9pm on Wednesday, July 24!

into the research and writing process of, as well as featuring a

The Cherry Blossom Clinic is thrilled to welcome a live session from the
legendary Hackamore Brick to the WFMU airwaves! This Brooklyn band's
1970 album "One Kiss Leads to Another" is a lost classic, combining a
primo Velvets grind with Kinks-level songwriting and drew raves at the
time from Lenny Kaye and Richard Meltzer. The LP has just been
remastered and reissued by Real Gone Music and the band is doing shows
to commemorate its being available for the first time in over 30 years.

specializing in uniquely dark and pulsating sounds that are by turns

Scones, which will be aired on July 28th -- don't sleep!

The Wingdale Community Singers is where core trio Rick Moody (author of
The Ice Storm and essay collection On Celestial Music), singer Hannah
Marcus, and guitarist/composer David Grubbs bring deep Brooklyn
harmonies and old time folk moves to life. They'll come to WFMU on July
29th to share tunes including pieces from their third record, Night,
Sleep, Death.

purchases a classic auto that turns out to have been stolen, and a
series of strange encounters follow.

Broadcloth is a chamber trio consisting of vocalist Anne Rhodes, cellist
Nathan Bontrager, and accordionist Adam Matlock. The trio improvises
and plays from nontraditional scores including graphic scores
hand-embroidered by Anne. All of the members also work closely in other
groups, including various projects with composer Anthony Braxton.

Strung-out, electric downer drift in the form of Mad Nanna, winging
their way from Melbourne, Australia for a US tour and a live session on
Brian's show today. Once aptly described as "battered folk", this combo
should tickle the brainlobes of avowed fans of such loose thinkers as
the Dead C, Shadow Ring, Jandek, and the Godz. They've generally resided
in the lo-to-no-fi realm on various releases on labels like Unwucht,
Soft Abuse, and Wormwood Grasshopper; a rare opportunity to hear them in
a bareboned live studio setting this afternoon on WFMU.
