UPCOMING SPECIALS ON WFMU:

Purple Rain in the Saharan Desert - Monty Hall Movie Preview
Saturday, November 7th, 6pm - 9pm
on Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg

We're screening something fun and a bit different at the next Monty Hall movie night a week from Saturday: The first ever Tuareg-language rock-u-drama! Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai - or Purple Rain in the Saharan Desert - is a collaboration between first-time filmmaker Christopher Kirkley and the standout artist on Kirkley's Sahel Sounds record label, guitarist and singer Mdou Moctar. The movie stars Moctar as an aspiring guitar hero overcoming family pressures, a jealous and underhanded competitor, and romantic challenges. Kinda like, well, Purple Rain and other classic music-driven feature films - but shot in the desert city of Agadez, Niger and chock-full of spellbinding psychedelic Sahel guitar music! Akounak is showingone time only, Saturday night November 14th at 8 at WFMU's Monty Hall. We'll chat with Kirkley and spotlight Mdou Moctar's amazing music on tonight's show.

The Ex with Ken Vandermark: Video and Audiocast Live From Monty Hall
Tuesday, November 10th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show

In case you weren't able to attend, Brian Turner's program put together a night at WFMU's Monty Hall on October 23rd headlined by The Ex (who were joined by Ken Vandermark on sax), and he'll be airing the full set on his program today at 4PM ET. But as a special bonus during the broadcast, you can simultaneously view the entire video of the set shot multi-cam that night, via Ustream linked from WFMU's home page! See Holland's greatest musical exports blow the roof off the joint in front of a full house of attendees, and while it may not be the same as "being there", you will get a pretty good idea of why this band's not-frequent-enough US tours are the stuff of legend. The Ex are in their 33rd year of existence, and listeners may remember they performed one of WFMU's 50th Anniversary shows with a full big band and an assortment of Ethiopian musicians on a colossal Lincoln Center Outdoors bill in 2008. Today, you'll see a comparatively stripped-down core lineup of Terrie Hessels, Katherina Bornefeld, Arnold DeBoer, and Andy Moor tear up the smaller confines of Monty Hall with the help of Vandermark. Tune in!

Ennio Morricone's 87th Birthday Tribute
Tuesday, November 10th, 7pm - 8pm
on
Morricone Island with Devon E. Levins
Devon pays tribute to the namesake of the show. One of the most prolific film composers of all time composing for over 500 films and selling over 40 million records worldwide, Ennio Morricone scored for many of the greats, e.g. Sergio Leone, Dario Argento, John Carpenter, Roman Polanksi, Mike Nichols, Brian De Palma and Guiseppe Tornatore. Il Maestro turns 87 on November 10th and doesn't appear to be easing up his workload with recent scores announced for Quentin Tarantino and Terrence Malick somehow squeezed in between his never-ending "60 Years of Music" world tour with 200-piece orchestra and choir.

Jake Meginsky
Tuesday, November 17th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show

Having studied under legendary free percussionist Milford Graves, Massachussetts native Jake Meginsky operates under a more electronic umbrella, albeit one that incorporates his teacher's sophisticated palette of textures into a wide range of atmospheres. Meginsky has released two LPs on Open Mouth (a label run by Body/Head guitarist Bill Nace) full of fractured minimal techno, near-silent dub passages, gnarly fields of stuttering noise, tonal mayhem and non-linear rhythms to amazing effect. He's live at Trans-Pecos on November 11th, and live on Brian's show today.

Anna von Hausswolff
Tuesday, November 17th, 9pm - Midnight
on Irene Trudel's show

As a child, Anna von Hausswolff was often enchanted by family stories of a gorgeous area from her native Sweden with a complicated past. She'd heard Sweden’s traditional folk music began in this naturally beautiful place, but a momentous uprising against the country’s king left its landscapes bathed in blood. Anna calls the place "Miraculous" and has based her new album on these storied lands. von Hausswolff’s voice echoes this beauteous but ghastly past, as she swoops from whispered incantations to ghastly shrieks. Anna von Hausswolff brings her band to WFMU to play some of these epic tunes.

Saturday, November 21st, 11am - 1pm

Those Darlins PLUS Cyril Jordan and George Alexander of the Flamin' Groovies
Saturday, November 21st, 3pm - 6pm
on
Todd-o-phonic Todd
Nashville's Those Darlins head east and rock the set of The Todd-O-Phonic Todd show! Find out why Paste Magazine had this to say about the tremendous trio: "Whether you thought they were a quirky-obnoxious novelty act or a gang of infinitely charming, boots-are-made-for-rockin’ Americana party girls, forget your initial impression of Those Darlins. Because, over the last few years, the band has become the spirit of rock ’n’ roll incarnate—a slightly older, wiser, modern-day Southern-garage version of The Runaways." Those Darlins are appearing at Terminal 5 on Wednesday Nov. 11th, opening for Shakey Graves.

Also today, Cyril Jordan and George Alexander of The Flamin' Groovies join Todd-O-Phonic Todd to chat about their incredible history, The Beatles and much more. Along with Chris Wilson and Victor Penalosa they have been playing live and doing material from the brilliant era of "Shake Some Action". The Flamin' Groovies will be performing at Monty Hall that very evening and at Baby's All Right in Brooklyn on Sunday 11/22.

Carter Thornton plus Tom Carter / Steve Gunn duo
Thursday, November 26th, 6am - 9am
on
Airborne Event
Start Thanksgiving the WFMU way. Carter Thornton (GNAW, Zashiki-Warashi, Pigeons, Enos Slaughter) brings a solo guitar set to WFMU. He's a relentless & restless innovator whose releases span the gamut from abstract classical guitar, experimental metal, field recordings, and destroyed songs. His new series of releases, Mapping the Ghost, begins this fall on Soft Abuse records.

Afterwards, guitar comrades Tom Carter & Steve Gunn will play in a duo. Tom Carter is a prolific musician who founded Charalambides in 1991 with Christina Carter. He's recently been focused on his bands with No Neck Blues Band co-founder Pat Murano as well as solo performances in collaboration with filmmakers. Tom's electric guitar work weaves melody into towering long-form drones, sculpting high-volume grit and charged silence together. His new LP is Long Time Underground (on Three Lobed).

Steve Gunn has numerous lauded solo, duo, and ensemble recordings. You can usually find him playing with his band, but he also finds time to serve as guitarist in Kurt Vile’s Violators or play duos like this with old friends. His playing shows the influence of Delta and Piedmont country blues, ecstatic jazz, and Gnawa and Carnatic music. His most recent record is the acclaimed Way Out Weather (on Paradise of Bachelors).

Saturday, November 28th, 11am - 1pm
