UPCOMING SPECIALS ON WFMU
(www.wfmu.org/upcoming)

Mark Stewart
Tuesday, January 31st, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show

An in-depth, spirited chat with the one and only Mark Stewart on Brian's program today. The Pop Group blasted right through the stylized cosmetics bogging down the Punk movement in 1978 by blurring the boundaries between funk, dub, free jazz, and more, with anarchic music and proactive politics, all in the purest of DIY sensibilities. After their disbanding in 1981 Stewart chased down his dub-leaning muse with assorted projects with Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound crew, and his own Maffia, all the while cementing his influence in countless musicians in his wake from The Birthday Party to Massive Attack. The Pop Group returned in 2010 and have just released a brand new album Honeymoon On Mars, working with legendary producer Dennis Bovell for the first time since their debut album. Tune in!

e'fessioux
Tuesday, January 31st, 9pm - Midnight
on Irene Trudel's show

Friends since childhood, the members of e'fessioux congure images of wildlife through their improvisational music. The band name is derived from a combination of members Steve Foreman, Ian Smit, Clive Smith and Bill Weisbach On their debut album, 'Jangala', e'fessioux describes their musical process single pass performance with no overdubs and only slight editing for shape and length, creating spontaneous compositions." e'fessioux bring in a dizzying array of electronics, percussion and guitars to perform live on Irene's show.

Joe Frank - "Karma Don't Deny Me"
Wednesday, February 1st, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irwin Chusid
One-hour dramas by Joe Frank air on sporadic Wednesday afternoons at 4pm (Eastern) on Irwin's program. On Weds. February 1st, we'll present "Karma Don't Deny Me," from Joe's "The Other Side" series. Joe's friend Larry becomes enraged at a neighbor's New Age nostrums. Joe recalls a strange encounter with an attractive female colleague while they were both teaching at an upscale private school in New York.

The Golden Grass
Sunday, February 5th, 6am - 9am
on
Burn It Down! with Nate K.
The Golden Grass are a Brooklyn-based power trio in the classic mold of Grand Funk Railroad, Blue Cheer, and Dust, adding in a dose of first-wave psychedelia and maybe a hint of prog for good measure. Over the course of a batch of singles, EPs, and a pair of full-lengths, the band has delivered pitch-perfect acid-fried boogie and slow-burn stoner anthems. Burn It Down! with Nate K. fires up the lava lamp (among other accoutrements) and welcomes Golden Grass to the show.

Up from the Basement Revisited
Monday, February 6th, 9am - Noon
on
Surface Noise with Joe McGasko
It's not a fact widely known, but WFMU has two extensive record libraries. One is the large and well-stocked main library on the spacious 2nd Floor of Ol' Monty. The other is a smaller room hidden in the dark and dim WFMU basement. This is where all the least played (and perhaps least loved) CDs and vinyl reside. A few years ago, Joe delved down deep and came up with some gems. Today on Surface Noise, Joe returns to the basement for more hidden and neglected music from the depths of WFMU.

Alan Bishop & Robert Millis
Tuesday, February 7th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
While one mere program is not nearly ample time to dig in to the collections of these two fellows, we'll be checking out the guest DJ sounds of Alan Bishop and Rob Millis as they visit Brian's show today from 4-6pm. Alan, returning for a second visit to the show, rightfully owns several feet of WFMU's library stacks with his work in the Sun City Girls, and solo as Alvarius B and Uncle Jim. On top of that, he's the co-founder of the Sublime Frequencies imprint, which has documented esoteric sounds from around the world with focus on Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North and West Africa. Millis has produced work for Sublime Frequencies including Indian Talking Machine, a 300-page book and CD anthology of his excavation of 78s from the Subcontinent. He's also a producer and co-founder of the Climax Golden Twins. Both their work and shared discoveries have burned into WFMU's collective DNA for decades, we're extremely excited to have them out to the station today and hear what's in their bag. Alvarius B also performs at Union Pool in Brooklyn February 4 and 5, Bishop will also DJ at BAM Cafe on February 3rd (free). Millis is opener for the February 4th Union Pool show!

Gospel of Mars
Thursday, February 9th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Strength Through Failure with Fabio
Aaron Moore (Volcano The Bear), Jef Brown (ex JOMF), and Bob Jones (Eaters) traverse a musical landscape that runs a rich gamut of hypnotic modal jazz, frenetic rhythmic meltdowns, and outer limits explorations. Their sound is forged in tiny rooms across New York City where audiences are invited to be delighted, battered, cracked up, and mesmerized over the course of a single set.

Greg Cartwright
Saturday, February 11th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Todd-o-phonic Todd's show
Greg Cartwright sits in on the Todd-O-Phonic Todd show with a stack of 45's and a closet full of stories. Greg is best known for his triumphant combos The Oblivians and Reigning Sound. He has been involved in many more musical projects and also performs solo. In this latter guise he will be playing at Monty Hall on Friday Feb. 10th and Union Pool Sat. Feb. 11th.

Tommy Roe
Saturday, February 18th, 3pm - 6pm
on Todd-o-phonic Todd's show

Tom Wilson's Music Factory #12 - Janis Ian
Wednesday, February 22nd, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irwin Chusid
In 1967 and '68 the charismatic record producer Tom Wilson hosted a free-form radio program called "The Music Factory," sponsored by MGM-Verve Records. The series has been gone from radio ever since, but Irwin is airing episodes on alternate Wednesday afternoons at 4pm (Eastern). On February 22nd, we'll hear Wilson interview 16-year-old songstress Janis Ian, whose 1967 hit "Society's Child," about an interracial romance, created controversy on Top 40 radio. Ian was born in New York, but grew up in New Jersey and went to high school in East Orange. This program originally aired in early 1968. More information about Wilson can be found at ProducerTomWilson.com.

Death By Unga Bunga PLUS Archie Bell
Saturday, February 25th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Todd-o-phonic Todd's show
The return of Death By Unga Bunga! Death By Unga Bunga crushed it on the 3/26/16 installment of the Todd-O-Phonic Todd show so much that they have been asked to return! Do not miss one of the greatest live bands extant today on their U.S. visit. Catch them at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park on Friday 2/24 and Baby's All Right in Brooklyn on Saturday 2/25!

Archie Bell instructs Todd-O-Phonic Todd's listeners on how to do the "Tighten Up". Archie Bell and The Drells hit big that dance tune and such great 45's as "I Can't Stop Dancing" and "(There's Gonna Be A) Showdown". They practically created the "Philly Sound". Archie performs as part of an amazing line-up for The Soul Clap 10th Anniversary on Friday March 3rd at Warsaw.

Phil Rudd
Saturday, March 4th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Todd-o-phonic Todd's show
Former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd talks with Todd-O-Phonic Todd about the 1970's Australian rock scene, his time spent looking at Angus Young's shorts and his less than infrequent brushes with the law. Not to mention his new album, perhaps aptly titled "Head Job".
