UPCOMING SPECIALS ON WFMU

Over The Edge
Monday, June 19th, 6pm - 7pm
on Do or DIY with People Like Us

From 1981 to 2015, Negativland's Don Joyce hosted Over The Edge, the longest running block of freeform live mix collage radio in broadcast history -- a program which continues today, having been inherited by long time show participant and collaborator Jon Leidecker. In this very Wobbly interview, Vicki and Jon discuss the history of collage radio, and the slow evolution of the Edge, as well as its many possible futures, both True and False.

New Zealand extravaganza with Roger Shepherd (founder of Flying Nun Records), Hamish Kilgour of The Clean, and Francisca Griffin of Look Blue Go Purple
Tuesday, June 20th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show

When Roger Shepherd conceived his record label Flying Nun in the backroom of a Christchurch, New Zealand record store in the early '80's, he gave birth to one of the most fertile and influential imprints in the independent music world. It's DIY aesthetic and connectivity to the country's post-punk zeitgeist gave international exposure to such artists as The Chills, Verlaines, Clean, Tall Dwarfs, Bailter Space, Straitjacket Fits, Bats, Axemen, and more. The label was sold off in 1990, but returned to its independent self in 2009, and continues to create a platform for New Zealand's music scene. Recently, Shepherd authored his memoir, In Love With These Times, out on Harper-Collins. He stops by Brian's show today with Hamish Kilgour of The Clean in tow for a retrospective on the great Flying Nun, with plenty of rarely-heard live recordings of the label's roster, collected by Brian to complement their visit. As a bonus, Francisca Griffin (one-time known as Kathy Bull) phones in to talk about her time in the fantastic 1980's all- female combo Look Blue Go Purple who hailed from Dunedin, NZ. For the uninitiated, Captured Tracks and Flying Nun have just released a stateside 2LP anthology of this great band's wonderful and enduring lysergic pop.

Thomas Arthur Doyle (TAD)
Tuesday, June 20th, 7pm - 8pm
on Morricone Island with Devon E. Levins

Thomas Arthur Doyle (TAD, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, Hog Molly) joins Morricone Island for a listen and to discuss his "return-to-roots" latest release entitled "Incineration Ceremony." Spending his formative years playing jazz clubs while studying classical music at Boise State University, Doyle releases his symphonic take on the dark and dreary textures, rhythms and material rolling around in his head informed by the likes of Morricone, horror films and Mozart. Not for the meek at heart.

Wednesday, June 21st, 3pm - 6pm

In 1967 and '68 the charismatic record producer Tom Wilson hosted a free-form radio program called "The Music Factory," sponsored by MGM-Verve Records. The series has been gone from radio ever since, but Irwin is airing episodes on alternate Wednesdays at 4pm (Eastern). On our June 21st episode, Wilson welcomes to the Music Factory country-pop singer Sandy Posey and features tracks from four Posey albums. Elsewhere in the program, Wilson spins tunes by Evie Sands, the Blues Project, the Fabulous Farquahr, Ohio Express, and others. "Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone" — Part 2
Friday, June 23rd, 9am - Noon
on
Give The Drummer Some with Doug Schulkind (on Give the Drummer Radio stream)
Settle in as Doug Schulkind presents the second installment of the historic, five-hour John Coltrane documentary, "Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone." Titled In the Pyramids, Part 2 investigates the science and spirituality of Coltrane's improvising and composing. Learn his motivations from transitioning from playing standard chord progressions into embracing first a model style, then a more spiritual grounding. Interviews with modal theorist George Russell, and Coltrane scholar Andrew White are featured. Hear John Coltrane himself speak about getting to "the best good" he can get to on his horn and as a man. Also hear the earliest known taped interview with Coltrane as he speaks about religion. Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Steve Lacy, Sonny Fortune, Cornel West and Amiri Baraka are also a significant part of this section of the documentary. Remember to tune in at 11am to hear it live as this program will not be archived.

Derek Walmsley & The Wire Magazine Guest DJ Roundtable
Friday, June 23rd, 9pm - Midnight
on
Daniel Blumin's show
As The Wire magazine celebrates it's 400th issue, editor Derek Walmsley drops in for a visit to spin some favorites and chat about where the magazine has been and where it's heading. He will also be live-editing everything that is said making this the least discombobulated radio program on record. But where were we?

Since the first issue of The Wire emerged in 1982, features such as Epiphanies and Invisible Jukebox as well as the heterogeneous reviews section have done much to encourage open-minded approaches to listening and musical discovery - an accomplishment worth celebrating! But that's not all! Once the editing is complete, tune in for guest DJ sets and conversations with several of the edited. Don't miss the musical selections from bonny Wire writers that'll make your toes twirl and your minds sizzle!

The Regrettes PLUS Peter Perrett (The Only Ones)
Saturday, June 24th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Todd-o-phonic Todd's show
The latest teenage sensation from California, The Regrettes, power through a live set. Writing songs that proudly bear a brazen and unabashed attitude in the vein of acts Courtney Barnett or Karen O - with a pop aesthetic reminiscent of 50's and 60's acts a la the Temptations or Buddy Holly - the LA based four piece create infectious, punk driven tracks. The Regrettes Warner Bros. debut, "Feel Your Feelings Fool!," is a joyous and honest romp through the emotional rollercoaster of the teenage dream. Catch The Regrettes at Rough Trade on June 21st.

40 years after The Only Ones made their debut, Peter Perrett has released a new solo album on Domino Records, "How The West Was Won." He has rediscovered the importance of rock'n'roll and now rock'n'roll can rediscover the importance of Peter Perrett. Enjoy a conversation between two masters of deadpan wit.

Honey Radar
Sunday, June 25th, 6am - 9am
on Burn It Down! with Nate K.

Playing a fractured, eminently catchy lo-fi psych-pop that brings together the best elements of various strains of DIY, while occasionally calling to mind the more gleefully scattershot singles of the classic Guided By Voices line-up, Honey Radar are one of the most infectious and satisfying, not to mention prolific (check out their band camp page), bands working in the underground today. They play Alphaville in Brooklyn on Tuesday, July 20, with San Francisco's Rays, Australia's Rat Columns, and local faves Home Blitz, and they will be live on Burn It Down! with Nate K. Sunday, June 25.

Rays
Monday, June 26th, Noon - 3pm
on Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock

This new Oakland band is comprised of four Bay area music veterans whose current and past musical projects include The World, Life Stinks, Violent Change and Dadfag. Death Waltz Records and Data Airlines are currently releasing a trilogy of decayed, dystopian, 8-bit/analog synth vinyl and cassette albums entitled "Reality Check," its prequel "The Signal" (both out now) and the to-be-named third in the series due in early 2018. Wojciech also composed the soundtracks for "400 Days," "Beyond The Gates," "Late Phases" and "Dark Souls," amongst others. Frontman of Great Plains, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Psandwich, and Counter Intuits (his current project), as well as a participant in the famed Ohio supergroup project Ego Summit, House truly is an institution. But he is also an avid record collector with a daunting knowledge of Ohio music history. He was kind enough to bring a box of Buckeye State rarities by the WFMU studios and give them a spin. Tune in Sunday, July 2, from 6:00 to 9:00 AM to hear them, and, of course, God bless America.

Razorlegs
Tuesday, July 11th, 3pm - 6pm
on Brian Turner's show

Bleeding walls of overloaded guitar and drum interplay from the psychedelic punk duo of Andrew Hurst on drums and PD Fadensonnen on guitar and stylophone. Fans of Blue Cheer, Fushitsusha, Chrome and general amplified confusion will dig today's in-studio proceedings.
