Put the Needle on the Call-In Raps Rewind to '89 with G-Spot
Friday, May 24th, 7pm - 8pm
on Put The Needle On The Record with Billy Jam
In 1986 Billy Jam, then a KALX Berkeley DJ, pioneered the “call-in raps” whereby he invited Bay Area radio listeners to phone in and freestyle over beats. A few years later in 1989 Gary “G-Spot” Baca became his co-host on the Northern California FM station when the two DJs expanded & elevated the call-in raps into a popular weekly feature. Currently on KPFK in LA, G-Spot will travel to NJ to re-join Billy Jam in the WFMU studios.
M. Geddes Gengras
Tuesday, May 28th, Midnight - 3am
on The Frow Show with Jesse Jarnow
Heady electronic wizard M. Geddes Gengras brings the weird to The Frow Show early in the wee hours of May 28th, plugging directly into the WFMU mothership for a live set celebrating the release of I Am the Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World, his layered and complex new album, out May 17th on Hausu Mountain. Ged’s last decade has included sweeping solo projects in a variety of modes, as well as ongoing projects, including participation in Duppy Gun, a dub/electronic collaboration between Ged, Sun Araw, Alex Grey, and a variety of Jamaican musicians.
Gladshot and The Piggies
Wednesday, May 29th, 9pm - Midnight
on The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
Double-barreled rock action to close out the month of May!
NYC garage-pop-psych outfit Gladshot returns to WFMU for their second live appearance! The band has a couple of albums under their belt; they cite AC/DC, Neil Diamond, and Cherry Glazerr as influences. They're playing at Baby's Alright in Brooklyn on Monday June 3. After years of gigging around NYC and beyond, The Piggies have finally released their first album, Something To Chew On (Sparkle-Time). They've got a trashy punk-blues sound, kind of like if you dipped a Heartbreakers ice cream cone in a vat of delicious AC/DC chocolate. They're playing at the Windjammer in Ridgewood on Saturday June 8.
Barrence Whitfield
Thursday, May 30th, 9pm - Midnight
on Music To Spazz By with Dave the Spazz
In anticipation of his show at Gran Torino on June 1st, legendary soul screamer Barrence Whitfield will drop by to discuss his latest platter Songs from the Sun Ra Cosmos--a collection of covers composed by Afrofuturist bandleader Sun Ra.
The Undertones
Saturday, June 1st, 3pm - 6pm
on Todd-o-phonic Todd's show
The Undertones emerged from Derry, Ireland in 1976, the result of 5 friends learning to play basic rock'n'roll. Their first single, "Teenage Kicks", is an enduring classic. Other smash successes include "Get Over You", "My Perfect Cousin", "You've Got My Number" and "Here Comes The Summer". The original incarnation split in 1983, but reunited in 1999 with Paul McLoone replacing Fearful Sharkey as vocalist. They are returning to the states and playing LPR on 5/22 (5/23 at The Gramercy Theatre is sold out) as well as Todd's show!
