The duo known as Quarterly make music influenced by folk and classical traditions. The cellist Kristen Drymala had classical training but also a keen interest in other kinds of music. Guitarist Christopher DiPietro, largely self-taught, eventually gravitated toward folk and Spanish guitar styles, though some of their compositions are cello and electric guitar. Finding common ground, they formed Quarterly and subsequently moved from Boston to Brooklyn. Their next release, Pomegranate, is due out in April.

Stuart Swezey, director of “Desolation Center,” discusses the documentary's untold story of the Reagan-era guerrilla punk and industrial desert happenings he promoted in Southern California which inspired Burning Man, Lollapalooza and Coachella. The film includes interviews and rare footage of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories and Savage Republic. "Desolation Center" screens at IFC in New York City on Wednesday 2/26 at 730pm with Q&A between Stuart, Jenn Pelly of Pitchfork, and Sonic Youth's Lee Renaldo and Steve Shelley.

Kevin Calabro, owner/manager of the Royal Potato Family record label, will visit Irwin's show on Weds. Feb. 26th around 4:30pm. Royal Potato Family, which Calabro co-founded with keyboardist Marco Benevento in 2009, recently entered its 11th year. Besides Benevento, the label has issued music by such Americana, jazz, and rock artists as Billy Martin, Steven Bernstein, Allison Miller, Stanton Moore, Seth Walker, Leslie Mendelson, Chris Lightcap, Neal Casal, Scott Amendola, Jenny Scheinman, Wil Blades, and the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. The program will explore the label's history and showcase a number of recordings.
