Cellist, composer, scholar and MacArthur Fellow Tomeka Reid’s
groundbreaking work on the cello, a non-traditional jazz instrument, has
propelled her ascent to the top echelon of creative musicians. Her
innovative quartet — Mary Halvorson (guitar), Jason Roebke (bass), Tomas
Fujiwara (drums) — is set to release its fourth album, dance! skip! hop!,
On Out of Your Head Records in February. Observations of Deviance host
David Mittleman’s interview with Tomeka Reid is the centerpiece of a
three-hour exploration of her astounding oeuvre.

Dutch sound poet and vocal artist Jaap Blonk has taught himself to have
nearly total control over his own voice. He'll stop by Vocal Fry while
touring the East Coast. Widely known for performing early Dada sound
poems like "Ursonate" by Kurt Schwitters, Jaap also composes and
improvises in a truly dizzying array of combinations, runs a record
label, and somehow still stops by WFMU to chat and perform live on
February 17th. Don't miss it!

“We’re Trying To Save Your Ass!” Sun Ra / Nuclear War Mega Mix (1982-1988)

“Nuclear War” (1982) is one of Sun Ra’s most powerful compositions from
the later part of his life. This fan favorite will be the focus of a
special four-hour episode of OoD. The first hour will feature cover
versions by other artists, followed by three-hours (twenty-eight
versions!) of rare, live, mostly unreleased performances of this classic
track by Sun Ra and his Arkestra.

screening on the 10th anniversary of the WFMU documentary, Sex and
Broadcasting, followed by a discussion with Director Tim Smith, Station
Manager Ken Freedman and WFMU Historian Elena Razlogova on what the film
shows, and what has changed since the film came out. Tickets here
